Resistance is a very common part of neural retraining and is to be expected. This resistance can take many forms – usually things like general anxiety, procrastination, avoidance, or an increase in physical symptoms. It’s normal to have some resistance when doing neural retraining, but it shouldn’t be overwhelming. Let’s discuss how to handle this at different stages of your practice, and stay tuned till the end – I’ll share five effective tools to help you navigate these moments.

When first starting a neural retraining program, it’s very common to experience some resistance in the form of anxiety or other symptoms. While a small spike is to be expected, too much resistance can take the limbic system further into dysregulation and keep it stuck in a triggering fight or flight mode. One of the most important steps is learning to guide your limbic system towards a state of calm and peace. When you’re just starting out with neural retraining, you might find it challenging to create or find calm. This is completely normal. For many of us, this is a new experience, so be patient with yourself. Understand that finding calm may only last for short moments initially, but with consistent practice, you’ll be able to build on these moments and create a more stable foundation for growth.

Many neural retraining programs assume that you’ve experienced regulation at some point in your life. However, if you’ve never felt this calm state or if it’s been a while, you might have a hard time getting there at first. It can then become tempting to push yourself too hard trying to get there. Remember, go easy on yourself – you can’t force your brain to relax. It takes time and patience to guide your limbic system to a state of peace.

Then as you progress in your retraining, you may have some ups and downs. There may be times when your resistance seems to increase. Think of it like peeling back the layers of an onion – you’ve just hit a new layer in your journey as you’re working through to the center. This deeper level of triggering is actually a sign that you’re making progress. Take a moment to celebrate and recognize these moments as part of the process, not as setbacks.

Know that your brain is working through old patterns, and this can sometimes bring up some resistance. But remember, this is just a deeper level you’re addressing, not a regression. Practice lots of self compassion and love as you grow in your ability to work with and calm your limbic system.

Now, let’s look at five tools you can use to manage resistance during your neural retraining practice:

First is to Incorporate more calming self-care activities into your routine. This can include activities like gentle yoga, meditation, or taking a warm bath. Prioritize these moments to help your brain experience safety and calm.

Second is to use grounding techniques to stay present. This can be as simple as focusing on your breath, feeling the ground under your feet, or holding a comforting object. Grounding helps bring you back to the present moment and reduces anxiety.

Third is spending time in nature. Being outdoors can be incredibly soothing for your limbic system. Whether it’s a walk in the park, sitting by a lake, or simply being in your garden, nature has a calming effect.

Fourth is to engage in creative activities that you enjoy. This could be anything from painting, knitting, writing, or playing a musical instrument. Creativity helps shift your focus and brings a sense of joy and relaxation.

And fifth is to spend time with friends and loved ones. Laughter and positive social interactions can significantly reduce anxiety. Make time for activities that bring you joy and connection.

Remember, a bit of resistance is a normal part of the neural retraining process. By incorporating these tools and being patient with yourself, you can navigate these moments more effectively. And by doing so, you are growing in being able to better work with and guide your limbic system. You’re doing amazing work on your journey, and every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Keep going, and know that you’re not alone.
