One of the most common topics that I talk about with clients is self-care. We’ve heard over and over again how important it is to prioritize self-care, but what exactly is it, and what activities qualify as self-care?

Self-care is anything that nourishes you and brings you joy – that can be physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Beyond that very broad definition, self-care has a very personal and unique-to-you meaning.

Using this definition, self-care covers a wide range of activities. It can be anything from a 20 minute meditation to going for a 3 mile run. Or from a bubble bath to a hike in the woods. You get to decide what it means for you, and then choose how to include those things in your day-to-day life. There really is no right or wrong way to do it!

There are many different types of self-care that we’ll want to think about.

1. Dealing with stress. We all face stress in our lives. It may be with our health, finances, job, family, or with the state of the world around us. It’s so easy for these daily stressors to build up and become really heavy for us to carry. Activities like meditation, mindfulness, prayer, or being in nature can be incredibly helpful here.

2. Increasing energy. It seems like we always want more energy! What are the things that get you energized or inspired? It might be going to a concert or even just dancing around in the living room to your favorite song. Or it could be a quieter event like watching an inspirational movie or sporting event, or watching a beautiful sunset.

3. Building emotional balance. We all have a past that has contributed to the person we are today. Sometimes parts of that past can bring with it some heavy emotional baggage. It takes intention and practice to be able to work through those old emotions in a healthy and productive way. Meditation, journaling, and creative arts are great tools to get in touch with those old emotions that may be weighing us down, or we may consider finding a therapist, coach, or religious counselor in order to work through things.

4. Maintaining physical health. We usually think of losing weight and exercising, but it’s so much more. In many situations, heavy exercise may not be appropriate, helpful, or even possible, and a focus on losing weight can lead to increased stress. Instead, consider approaching physical health from a place of self compassion. Think about what kind of movement leaves you feeling good – it may be a walk with a family member after dinner, or a relaxing yoga class. Self-care may mean setting aside the extra time to fix yourself a healthy meal and then taking the time to slow down and really enjoy it.

5. Creating healthy connections. Social connections are crucial for our overall wellbeing. As we’ve seen over the past few years, living isolated from others can be very difficult and can cause emotional health issues. There have been many studies showing the association of healthy social relationships with improved mental health as well as longer and healthier lifespan. This could mean prioritizing meaningful conversations over dinner with the family or even taking time to sit with a favorite pet. It could be as simple as calling a friend, taking a class, or joining a neighborhood club.

Is there one of these self-care categories that feels more challenging? One that seems more difficult than the others? That’s often the case. Let go of any self critical thoughts or judgment, and just explore how you might be able to take a few minutes of self-care in that area.

Of course, there are an unlimited number of self-care activities that you could choose under each of these categories. You’re only limited by your imagination!

I’d love to hear some of your favorite self-care tools and how you are able to include them in your day. What makes those things special to you? And how do you feel afterwards?
